Acts 2:14-41

WHAT DID PENTECOST MEAN?

2:14 – The answer to verse 12 “Whatever could this mean?”

‘and said to them…’ – Peter’s words were just as anointed by the Holy Spirit as the tongues of verse 4!

apophtheggomai {ap-of-theng'-om-ahee}
1) to speak out, speak forth, pronounce
1a) not a word of everyday speech but one "belonging to dignified and elevated discourse"

This message of Peter’s could not be explained by the skills of man, but only by divine anointing.

2:15 – NO, we aren’t drunk, it’s only 9AM.

2:16 – Fulfillment of prophecy

Joel 2:28-32 NIV

“And afterwards, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.”

Acts 2:17-21, NIV

“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”

“Last days” – the period of time between Christ’s first coming and his second coming

Revelation 12:12

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ‘LAST DAYS’
• Outpouring of the Holy Spirit – v. 17, 18
• Prophecy – v. 17, 18
• Visions and dreams – v. 17
• Signs and wonders – v. 19, 20
• Salvation to all who believe – v. 21

This is what Pentecost meant then, and it is what it means now.

2:22-36 - THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL

Signs and wonders, miracles, visions, dreams, tongues and prophecies DO NOT SAVE PEOPLE. Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ saves people. – See Romans 1:16

So, Peter carefully outlines the story of Jesus and demonstrates the Gospel message:

• 2:22 – Jesus’ life and ministry on earth
• 2:23 – Jesus’ crucifixion
• 2:24-32 – Jesus’ resurrection
• 2:33-35 – Jesus’ exaltation
• 2:36 – Jesus the Christ, the Messiah

2:37 – The People’s Response

What does it mean to be ‘cut to the heart’?
Can you be saved without being ‘cut’?

2:38-40 – Peter’s Instruction

Repentance & Baptism

• What is repentance? When should repentance happen?
• Why is baptism important? When should baptism happen?
• What happens when one repents and is baptized?

2:41 – The Results

• What was the quantity of growth?
• What was the quality of growth?
• What happens when you have one without the other?
