Acts 5:1-11

Acts 5:1-11

4:36-37 BARNABUS – Describe the quality of his faith.

5:1-11 Read

What was the sin of Ananias and Sapphira?

Godly options: (v. 4)

1. Keep the property for self.
2. Give a partial donation of your choosing.

What was the cause of their sin?

“The devil made me do it?”

v. 3 They followed the temptation of Satan.

Resistance isn’t futile – it’s effective! James 4:7 and 1 Corinthians 10:13

James 1:12-19

12 – Blessing and rewards

13 – God is not the source of temptation.

14 – The source: being drawn away by our lusts

15 – Conception that leads to death

16 – Warning!

17 – Reminder of God’s provision

18 – The Word of Truth

19 – Listening, speaking and doing. The right order and speed.

Although the powers of darkness can influence health, loved ones, material passions and peace, moral decisions are strictly the responsibility of the individual. Satan can deceive us, but he cannot make our moral choices for us.

v. 3-4 How did Peter know that Ananias was lying?

Prophetic word was given – 1 Corinthians 14:24-25

v. 5-6 Why death? (Also v. 9)

God decided.
God hates hypocrisy.
Job 27:8
Matthew 23:27-29

v. 7-8 Sapphira’s choice

What does it mean to ‘test the Spirit of the Lord’?

v. 9-10 Sapphira’s conclusion

v. 11 The church’s response

‘great fear’ – a wholesome and beneficial fear

“The sin of Ananias and Sapphira was, that they were ambitious of being thought eminent disciples, when they were not true disciples. Hypocrites may deny themselves, may forego their worldly advantage in one instance, with a prospect of finding their account in something else. They were covetous of the wealth of the world, and distrustful of God and his providence. They thought they might serve both God and mammon. They thought to deceive the apostles. The Spirit of God in Peter discerned the principle of unbelief reigning in the heart of Ananias. But whatever Satan might suggest, he could not have filled the heart of Ananias with this wickedness had he not been consenting. The falsehood was an attempt to deceive the Spirit of truth, who so manifestly spoke and acted by the apostles. The crime of Ananias was not his retaining part of the price of the land; he might have kept it all, had he pleased; but his endeavouring to impose upon the apostles with an awful lie, from a desire to make a vain show, joined with covetousness. But if we think to put a cheat upon God, we shall put a fatal cheat upon our own souls. How sad to see those relations who should quicken one another to that which is good, hardening one another in that which is evil! And this punishment was in reality mercy to vast numbers. It would cause strict self-examination, prayer, and dread of hypocrisy, covetousness, and vain-glory, and it should still do so. It would prevent the increase of false professors. Let us learn hence how hateful falsehood is to the God of truth, and not only shun a direct lie, but all advantages from the use of doubtful expressions, and double meaning in our speech.”

Acts 4:32-37

Acts 4:32-37

REVIEW
These are exciting times for the Jerusalem church. Just like Jesus promised (Matthew 16:18), the Gates of Hades are shaking against the forces of God’s Kingdom! Christ has manifested Himself physically in the shaking of the room where the believers were gathered (4:31) And ‘they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” just like at Pentecost.

4:32-33 SIGNS OF THE KINGDOM

Two vitally important parts of the Christian lifestyle:
1. Generous sharing of material goods.
2. Witnessing about the resurrection with power.

The results of these two characteristics was: “much grace was upon them all…”

WHAT ARE THE “SIGNS” OF GOD’S KINGDOM?

Matthew 24:14
Mark 6:10

God’s Kingdom does not have geographical or political boundaries.

God’s Kingdom is present in a community of believers who:
1. Recognize that Jesus is Lord.
2. Encourage the signs of the Kingdom to characterize their behavior, both individually and collectively.

The Signs of the Kingdom

Luke 4:16-19, Isaiah 61:1-2
1. Preaching the Gospel to the poor
2. Healing the brokenhearted
3. Delivering captives
4. Recovery of sight to the blind
5. Releasing the oppressed
6. Proclaiming God’s favor

Luke 7:20-23
7. Healing the sick
8. Casting out evil spirits
9. Making lame people walk
10. Cleansing lepers
11. Restoring healing to the deaf
12. Raising the dead

Mark 16:15-18
13. Speaking in new tongues
14. Safely picking up serpents (Acts 28:3-5)
15. Immunity to poison

4:34-5:11 THE SHARING OF MATERIAL GOODS

Kingdom Principle: Matthew 6:19

“The Kingdom principle is not to do without material goods. The principle is that we should not prioritize material goods. We should prioritize unselfishly loving our fellow believers and also our wider circle of neighbors whether they are Christians or not.”
C. Peter Wagner The Acts of the Apostles

4:34-35

“Although in fact and in law they continued to own their goods, yet in heart and mind they cultivated an attitude so radical that they thought of their possessions as being available to help needy sisters and brothers. The amazing results was that no poverty existed in the church.” C. Peter Wagner

Deuteronomy 15:4

4:36-37 THE EXAMPLE OF BARNABUS

What did he do?

How did he do it?

Why did he do it?

Acts 4:1-31

Acts 4:1-31

1-3 JAILED FOR DOING GOOD

• Priests – On duty doing daily sacrifices
• Captain of the Temple – Chief of Temple Police
• Sadducees – Small, but extremely powerful political party defending the status quo

The political pressure to defend the status quo was amazing. The sect of Christ-followers were rapidly growing and could endanger what those in power had worked so hard to achieve.

In addition, especially for the Sadducees, the spiritual pressure to fight against the Christ-followers was high because the Sadducees taught that there was no life after death – that resurrection was a myth. Jesus took them to task for this in Mark 12:18-27

Placed in jail for overnight

4 EVANGELISTIC RESULTS OF HEALING MIRACLE

The ultimate objective of healing, deliverance, preaching and suffering persecution continues to be that of making disciples of all nations.

Luke shows this report to encourage us to continue on in the work of Christ even when doing so results in suffering and persecution.

Galatians 6:9
2 Thessalonians 3:13

On the day of Pentecost some 3000 men came to Christ (Acts 2:41). Note, the Greek word for men in this case is gender specific meaning MEN as in male. This raises several issues:

1. Men were the head of household, and determined the direction a family took. Therefore, if the man came to Christ, his whole family would. Conservatively speaking, if a man came to Christ, he’d bring his wife and at least one child with him. Meaning that when Luke speaks of 3000 men, the total number of converts on the day of Pentecost could easily have been 9000!

2. The city of Jerusalem was crowded with tens of thousands of pilgrims during the Festivals season when Pentecost occurred. Many of those who came to Christ that day soon returned to their homes, spreading the Gospel to other parts of Israel and the Roman Empire.

3. How many Christians remained in Jerusalem? Luke tells us that after the healing of the crippled beggar in 4:4, the number was now 5000 men. Using the same conservative numbers as above, this could mean that some 15,000 people in Jerusalem were now followers of Jesus.

Clearly this represents a serious disturbance in the status quo.

5-6 STATUS QUO MEETS THE NEW MAN

Sanhedrin (v. 15) was the Jewish Senate and Supreme Court all balled up into one body of 70 members. Comprised of rulers, elders, scribes and High Priest.

It took an extremely serious situation to warrant such a high level meeting. What was it about the healing of a lowly beggar that would cause such panic amongst the powers that be?

7 POWER & AUTHORITY

The Sanhedrin is seeking one agenda: to protect their own power and authority.

Notice that they don’t question the validity of the miracle.

Luke 21:12-13

8-11 THE NEW MAN RESPONDS

The spiritual condition: “filled w/ the Holy Spirit” – Luke 11:13

The explanation:
‘The man crucified…’
‘resurrected…’
‘by God’s power and authority’
is how the beggar was healed.

Turning the tables: From accused to accuser… ‘who YOU crucified…’

‘YOU sinned against God…
God demonstrated His authenticity by raising Him…
Fulfillment of prophecy (11) – Psalms 118:22

12 THE BOTTOM LINE

Christ is the POWER for salvation
Christ is the AUTHORITY for salvation

13-15 THE SHOCKED SILENCE OF THE SANHEDRIN

Courage

Unschooled, ordinary men

Astonished

Aware of their connection to Jesus – John 15:5

Evidence was undeniable

Nothing to say

They then did exactly what ‘religious’ people always do – they called a meeting

16-17 HARD HEARTS MISS THE TRUTH

What are WE going to do with these men?

The miracle is undeniable – so how do we stop this?

- Misplaced authority
- Political vs. spiritual minds – Romans 8:6

18-22 THE SHOWDOWN AT SANHEDRIN CORRAL

70 vs. 2 – who wins?

Order: Do not speak in Jesus’ name!
This same assault continues to this day. Why?

Response:
Obey – man or God?

We can’t help speaking what we’ve…
Seen – experienced!
Heard – understood!

70 defeated old men: “let them go, we can’t find a way to punish them!”
Note: This is the same group who found a way to kill Jesus without cause! Could this be an example of the ‘greater things’ of John 14:12?

23-30 THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Boldness
Power

31 THE ANSWER OF GOD

Power
Boldness

Acts 3

It’s three months since Pentecost.

The festivals are over.

The pilgrims have returned to the homes.

Things are back to normal. Well, not exactly.

3:1-3 – The Setup

The characters:
Peter and John, as well as all the other disciples of the day, looked like Jews, talked like Jews, behaved like Jews, regarded themselves as Jews and we seen by unbelievers as Jews.

The beggar. What do we know about him?

3:4-7 – The Miracle

“look at us”

“expecting to get something”

“no money”

“in the Name of Jesus… rise up and walk…”

NO hesitation!

Dr. Luke’s Report of the Miracle

Right hand

Bones receive strength

Birth defect

No physical therapy needed

“But what I do have I give you…”

Healing power (Acts 1:8) A healing such as this does not require the gift of healing. All Christians have a role to play in praying for healing!

Authority (Matthew 10:1) “In the name of Jesus…”

Who’s faith did the healing?

Three options:

1. The sick person – Matthew 9:27-31
2. An intermediary – Matthew 8:5-13
3. The person who does the healing – THIS CASE

The purpose of healing: Healing does not save – but it points to the Savior!

Why did the healing happen at that particular time?

A key to ministering healing is to be sensitive to God’s timing.
John 5:19 & Philippians 2:13

Because Peter was so sure of God’s timing, he chose not to pray a prayer of intercession, he simply spoke a command of healing.

3:8-11 - Testimony

By deed:
By word:

3:12-16 – Interpretation

Three demands:

1. Repent – 3:19, 26
2. Receive forgiveness – 3:19
3. Join the army of God – 3:25

Now, there is a lot more to this story – as we will see in Chapter 4.
